Keyboard and mouse broke for me too when I upgraded Jaunty and rebooted yesterday (I had been upgrading/rebooting daily). Both USB and PS/2 interfaces are affected for the kdm and gdm login screen. I dropped to the recovery console, started the SSH server and then resumed booting and was able to copy logs off using ssh while it was at the login screen. Xorg.0.log is attached which reports mouse and keyboard could not be found. The command hal-device reports that it couldn't connect to hald. The command
 sudo hald --daemon=no --use-syslog --verbose=yes
reports:
*** [DIE] mmap_cache.c:di_rules_init():79 : Couldn't mmap file '/var/cache/hald/fdi-cache', errno=22: Invalid argument

The command ls -la /var/cache/hald/fdi-cache reports:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2009-02-27 21:43 /var/cache/hald/fdi-cache

The command apt-get --reinstall install hal-info hangs at the point where it tries to start the hal daemon.
