Ubuntu GNOME is a special case, and actually I'm trying to fix it via bug #1594681.
Would be great if you could try a workaround. Open the ~/.profile file for editing and add these lines:
export QT_IM_MODULE=xim export XMODIFIERS=@im=xim
Then log out and log in again.
