I just tried those lines in ~/.profile on Ubuntu GNOME, and it didn't help for me either. The problem is that GNOME is tightly tied to IBus nowadays - it's bug #1594681, and it's not resolved yet. Please feel free to subscribe to it.
So my advice for now: Avoid Ubuntu GNOME if you want flexibility as regards input sources.
