The latest xpm is fine, although some people prefer a transparent area around a non-square icon. Patches cannot handle binary files, but a xpm file is a text file (try less), and is fine. If you *really* need a binary file, I've seen a few packages that have a uuencoded patch, and uudecode in debian/rules.
