(One additional data point as discussed on IRC is that /usr/share/applications/libreoffice-writer.desktop contains X-GIO-NoFuse=true so that soffice should not be passed a/run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share:server=mlknrmc1,share=rmc1dv04/MIS/SAP Tech/Basis/2008 PE1.XLS pathname.)
