And just to be clear, DVD playback isn't the only issue. The system becomes
slow and unresponsive when reading from disks if DMA is disabled.

Is it at all possible to make sweeping generalisations that would help this
issue? For example, "all drives faster than 48x are new and all new drives
support DMA"? Or, "all DVD-R drives must support DMA"?

Also, how do other distributions deal with this issue?
