hey,
I have been trying to get this fixed for the whole weekend
I first tried to use the instructions from alsa-projects

so I followed the instruction here
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=ATI&card=ATI-IXP+southbridge+HD-audio+and+modem.&chip=SB450&module=hda-intel
installation works after a lot of frustration

I run modprobe snd-hda-intel;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss
no problem

I run alsamixer
>> alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

still no sound even after a reboot

I search and find this
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=187156
I follow the instructions
I run alsaconf and he cant find any pci cards
so still no sound

so after a long search I find this
http://www.hrw.one.pl/2006/11/13/sound-is-working-on-dfi-rs482/
a guy with the same problem as mine and tell me I need to recompile the kernel

so i download the last kernel
find a nice tutorial here
http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_ubuntu
follow the instruction
apply the patch
compile
after 2 hours waiting I have my two .deb files
install reboot
some trouble with the graphics (I put a too high refresh rate), fix it , boot
no sound

so I try the last tutorial again
run alsaconf and miracle he finds the atii-xpcard
I install it
no sound
I reboot still no sound

I try the things from alsa-project again
no sound again

now I try alsaconf again for putting the resulting output here
he doesnt find my sound card anymore :'(
only output

If someone things that there is some problem with my hardware, I don't think thats the problem because it works fine under windows xp
