Same problem on my Dell L400 with fresh Xubuntu 8.04 install.
The Laptop used to go into sleep mode while loading X.
I followed the advices and put Sleep modes to false in /etc/default/acpi-support
Now xunbuntu load perfectly to login screen.
Problem is that the laptop go into sleep mode just after login.
I suppose that their is a bunch of "user preferences" loaded during login that overwrite the acpi default setting.
If someone could tell me where are this setting stored ?
