I have had acpi=off in grub/menu.lst for the past number of months. Last week I upgraded to gutsy and so am now running 2.6.22-10-generic. This evening, following upgrade to latest, I tried removing the acpi=off from grub.

Now acpi_listen is totally silent and the problem has disappeared. It therefore seems to be fixed.
