Deal all,

I have encountered the same problem with an old MSI Wind U100 netbook (kernel 4.14.10-1 / not Ubuntu, sorry).

To start it, I just edited the grub settings at start-up: "set gfxoayload=text" (instead of keep). [enter in edition mode by "e", then "F10" after modification]

That worked: after that, I modified the /boot/grub.cfg file consequently.
