I have just come across this on a Thinkpad x40 with a fresh install (yesterday) of Intrepid. Reading the posts above, I am using this work around to suspend and resume:

From gnome,
switch to a console ctrl-alt-f1

to suspend to RAM:
$ sudo pw-suspend

when it wakes up again with a dead back light, type:
$ sudo vbetool post

You can then flick back to the gnome console with a few presses of alt-right
