I, have also that problem, can ubuntu fix that? or this The mute key works ok, while just pressing once the volume up or down keys seems to generate a loop where the volume is continuously increased (or decreased).
After that, it's not possible to access the gnome menus anymore and the system becomes pretty much unusable, requiring a session restart.
