I have the exact same problem Chris Bainbridge and Jim Cauthen have. I am using KDE on Thinkpad T42, Lucid 10.04. Display goes to dimmest setting after login. I can then make it brighter manually. Screensaver does not affect it. It also goes dim after display turns off and then back on (I have it set to turn off after 2 hours, even in AC mode).
