Thirded. I get this on my eeePC 1001p. The screen is dim in Plymouth, then GDM starts and it flashes bright, then back to dim at the login window. If I then manually increase the brightness (using the brightness keys) and log in it will flicker, then go "maximum dim" when I am fully logged in.
