This problem seems to have been resolved in the latest mainline kernel 2.6.35-999-generic_2.6.35-999.201007211008. jbd2 only writes every 1-2 minutes which is more tolerable. Unfortunately, I had to downgrade back to 2.6.32-23-generic-pae because of another bug.
