When the poulsbo kernel module is loaded at boot, as it is now with 12.04, X fails completely (no VESA, no graphical interface, just a command prompt).

You can start X / lightdm with

rmmod poulsbo
depmod psb_gfx
/etc/init.d/lisghtdm restart
