This isn't specific to a particular graphics chipset. I see the behavior on a laptop with an Intel GMA4500:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
 Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 30dd
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 46
 Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
 Memory at c0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
 I/O ports at 60f0 [size=8]
 Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
 Capabilities: <access denied>
 Kernel driver in use: i915
 Kernel modules: i915

and also on a workstation with an nVidia Quadro FX 4800:

60:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT200GL [Quadro FX 4800] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
 Subsystem: nVidia Corporation Device 0594
 Physical Slot: 2
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 28
 Memory at f2000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
 Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
 Memory at f0000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=32M]
 I/O ports at 2000 [size=128]
 Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
 Capabilities: <access denied>
 Kernel driver in use: nvidia
 Kernel modules: nvidia-current, nouveau, nvidiafb

On both of these systems, I am running in "Ubuntu Classic" mode.
