With Thunar file manager things are even faster:

~3500 files takes >0.5s
~20000 files takes ~2s

This is ~15 times faster than Nautilus... and it makes a huge difference in usability. Of course, Thunar lacks some of the great features of Nautilus, but I can't see how things like a double pane should have such a big impact on speed.
