I should have written more in my previous message.
Having a local lightweight DNS server configured by default, even if it does not respect `/etc/hosts`, may be seen as an opportunity.
Don't force it to use `/etc/hosts`. Just configure it by adding to `/etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d`.
This means we can add wildcards, which isn't possible in `/etc/hosts`.
