"Totem inhibits the screensaver as soon as anything is playing. But sometimes I use totem to play music..."
If Totem inhibits the screensaver when it is playing music, that's a bug in Totem. It should inhibit the screensaver only when it's playing a movie (or when it's playing music but there is an upcoming movie in the Playlist).
