While this is a long and interesting bug discussion, the original problem
boiled down to "LDBM is broken" and, for good or for ill, we've now made
the jump to using BDB exclusively and have removed LDBM support. So I
think this bug should now be closed.

If there are still serious BDB performance issues (which I don't believe
there are), they should be opened as separate bugs.
