Yes, popler is a fork of xpdf pdf rendering but by default they differ for printing.
xpdf use its own functions aka pdftops and send a ps file.
evince copy the pdf, which is translated later by cups with gs.
And I made a mistake myself :) its pdfinfo -box not --box.
