I am sorry for the previous comment, it was probably because I didn't have ServerAliveInterval 15 in my .ssh/config (or use -o ServerAliveInterval=15 on the sshfs command line) This will force the ssh connection to stay alive even if you have no activity. This is written in the sshfs FAQ (zcat /usr/share/doc/sshfs/FAQ.txt.gz)
