No, you don't understand... GRUB can be made to work.

And XFS has clear advantages in certain situations. So xfsprogs needs to be on the CD anyways, so having XFS on /boot will not require any extra space.

It should be possible to use a single filesystem type on all your devices.

Please note, other distro like Fedora have XFS on boot working, so this probably is a Debian/Ubuntu specific bug.
