I would do as you ask if I knew where that log was. I have searched for with
G_Desktop and XP's own search device. If it's gotta be found by KUBUNTU,
then that's gonna be a problem.

Let me include a c/p of this problem I am having that I posted on a techsite
the other day so you can get a good idea what's happening:

Part #1,

I will devote a 5.1g hdd on my eid/card to the install and make it dual-boot
with XP-Pro. This puts 10 hdds on this system...gotta be careful of
overloading the PSU.

I tried to install Kubuntu on it, but GRUB failed to install 6 times.....I
sent a log to Kubuntu research/bug_reports and they will get back to
me...but I think it looks like it might be better to install that version
after I get some time in the Linux environment.

For now, I think I'll sit on Kubuntu, and just run Knoppix here.

Now I have two puters running Linux stuff on dual-boots. I like them both,
but yes, there's a difference with the processor speeds. Even though I am
running right now on a live-disc for Kubuntu, it is a lot faster on this
Enermax/SOYO unit, as compared to the Dell/P III with the full install.

I think I have to change the font defaults in the both of them though...this
letters are 'way too small.

BTW: the Dell while in XP cannot see the hdb where Mepis is installed. I
wonder if that's gonna be the case here too on Kubuntu. My vid card here
(NVIDIA GeForce FX5500 is running just fine, although there was a slight
shift in the centering of the screen that was very easy to correct
here...it'll probably be the other way when I boot XP too.

So far, I am very happy with both of these Linux systems...they are
intuitive unless the sound card here is a little confusing too...I will see
later when I do the install.

I recommend that all who have shied away from either of these distros (more
L-Talk) to at least *try* the live-cd versions that can be downloaded from
places on the net. You won't be sorry.

Part #2

I've decided that Knoppix Live! is not the program I like.

It appears to be limited by my inspection, and since I don't want to have
this puter (Enermax/SOYO) with *no* XP install as a dual-boot with it, I
will perhaps dismiss it entirely. I am willing to mail my second copy of the
Knoppix-Live! cd if anyone wants it.....I only need one copy for archive
files.

Running it on live version is ok, but not what I want to do.

Since I want to have the duality factor as a primary consideration, I hope
my bug report to Kubuntu gets some assist. I like the way Kubuntu looks and
feels as a "live", and want to install it as a dual-boot if I can get the
GRUB problem straightened out. I have sent a bug report to Kubuntu...let's
hope they respond soon.

I really want to run Kubuntu.....

Part #3

*If Jen or someone (Chill?) is looking on, I need to know what they think
about my using the 5.1g hdd on an eide expansion card for the root of
Kubuntu...is this the reason why I cannot get GRUB to install?

I've removed all the RAID stuff and gone to JBODS, and even pulled a few
hdds outta the tower too. I am running XP on root C drive, data on d and h,
and I've set aside k for Linux/Kubuntu. K runs thru an ULTRA expansion card
plugged into the mobo. I don't get any errors on the install until I hit the
GRUB device.

I also see during the boot to Kubuntu that there's no affirmation of PCMCIA
or COMMON UNIX PRINT SYST PUPSD getting installed. They never get the blue
check-mark telling me they are installed, in case that really means
anything.

*Part #4

At part 6 of 6 during the installation GRUB failed to install 4 times now
and then aborted the installation of the rest of KUBUNTU, dumping me back
into XP.

That's why I am wondering if the problem is accessing the ultra drive on k
position.

If Kubuntu is not able to work from that hdd position (K), as in thru the
expansion card, then I may have to physically move some of the drives
around. Right now I have K drive cleaned and ready for KUBUNTU install, but
lost F thru I. In fact, KUBUNTU formatted the K drive for me after I had
moved some files off it from XP.

The boot splash sees all the drives ok, just not when I get to windows or
even KNOPPIX/LIVE!

I need to know what GRUB has to do...is it a *directory* to find KUBUNTU
when I boot-up or is it the actual preliminary *installer program* for
KUBUNTU?

If I need to allow GRUB to install everything on Window's root drive, then I
will, but I am afraid now of corrupting the whole C drive. C is a 40g root
for XP and my security prgms right now.

Do I need to allow KUBUNTU to install on the same drive as XP's root? Or is
there just a small .exe-type prgm on the root drive that then toggles K?

I told KUBUNTU to install on K, but for some unknown reason it died
trying....but I don't know what failed: writing to K or putting the pointer
to K on C (root) drive.

I have the following drives physically installed:

   -
C= 40g Root for XP, still accessable
D= 200g data NTFS, still accessable
E= 200g data NTFS, still accessable
F= 200g data NTFS unseen now
G= 200g data NTFS unseen now
H= 200g data NTFS unseen now
I= 200g data NTFS unseen now
J= 200g Ultra data NTFS on EIDE card, still accessable
K= 200g Ultra now formatted to FAT32 by KUBUNTU on EIDE card, empty

Drives C thru K were on JBOD with J and K plugged onto the EIDE card
installed on MOBO

KUBUNTU sees all the drives ok and reassigns them letters hda thru hdi;
XP has lost F thru I;
boot/splash see them all.

Joe, I hope you don't mind me saying so but I really do think you are
playing with fire with your adventures into dual booting Linux with Windows.

After getting my fingers burnt upgrading Fedora Core 1 to Core 2 and losing
my Windows partition I vowed to never again play with dual booting and got a
removable caddy system as Jen mentioned in her last post. That way both
Linux and Windows can have their own hard drives and do not need to dual
boot.

I kept my data on a FAT 32 partition on a third, fixed hard drive so that
both Linux and Windows could access those files. That system worked well and
I had no fear of my Windows installation getting trashed.

Thanks..and I have also come to the same conclusion...although my DELL P III
seems happy with the dual-boot XP and Meppis.

This JBOD/SOYO Dragon Ultra Platinum w/Athlon XP setup seems to be too hard
for L-based systems to comprehend. Remember that they say it will dual-boot
with full serviceability on both systems. Maybe *it's* the source of the
problem.

Thankfully, there wasn't much that I could not live without on those drives
anyway...now if it screwed up my videos and music files...I'D BE HOPPING!!!

The worst loss was the Audacity files that I never got converted to MP3's
anyway...I still cannot figure that one out. OH, and I also had the pixs of
all the puters from youse guys on one of those drives too..but I can just go
back to the upload site and re-get them.

I was just saving those drives for more and more videos.

It's a real shame too that the dual-boot with KUBUNTU won't work well. I
totally like the feel and visuals of it. In the short time I tried it live,
I was very impressed. Not holding Linux things as responsible for any
losses...it would even be foolish to try to install XP with 2000 too...
though I know it can be done, but not be me.

Gotta go into the corner and think for a while now. :(

Like I said, I don't know where the wheels fell off...and I am kinda afraid
to let L-types have access to any more of my hdds...I am beginning to lose a
lot of stuff that I don't want to lose.
