John, there is another possibility as well: During the actual installation process, did you continue using the system (exploring menu items, etc)?

I ask because a very similar bug report (bug #75100) appears to have been caused by this. (It's funny, I cannot find anything to suggest that one shouldn't, and the system certainly permits it, but if permitted, the system should be more robust, and if a bad idea, it should not be permitted...).

By letting us know what was happening during the install, we'll have a much better idea of what the problem is and how to fix it. Thanks!
