Just tried in VirtualBox now (using virtualbox from the archive on Oneiric).

A setup with 2 8GB drives attached to one controller (default config) with a VM setup as Ubuntu 32bit with 412MB of RAM (I used an old laptop for virtualbox testing) correctly shows up as both sda and sdb in the auto partitioning drop down and in Manual partitioning.

Can you try and reproduce with the same ISO image I'm using? http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20110930/oneiric-desktop-i386.iso
