echo FRAMEBUFFER=y >>/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
update-initramfs -u

Makes no difference for me on a HP mini 110 running ubuntu 10.10 with unity.

Pity - I'd be happy with a solution that simply hid it.
