I had attempted loading unity with fglrx last month but also failed to get it going. No idea why it isn't working though... I'd assumed at the time it was a unity bug since I could get classic+compiz running. But I suppose a driver bug is possible.

Alberto is probably the best contact point for this bug since he can escalate it to AMD.
