the steps mentioned by Michael here (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/58424/comments/16) have gotten me past this bug.

the problem appears to be with the unofficial compiz packages.

recommend closing this bug, and sorry for not finding the duplicate earlier. didn't know what to look for.
