Attaching a tar.gz archive that can be extracted to /etc/init/ which replaces the faulty alsa-utils upstart conf files:

$ tar -tf lp1269731-upstart-alsa-utls.tar.gz
etc/
etc/init/
etc/init/alsa-state.conf
etc/init/alsa-restore.conf
etc/init/alsa-store.conf

To install, download the attachment and then do:

sudo tar -xzf lp1269731-upstart-alsa-utls.tar.gz -C /
