All the fonts are in one directory and the 'aliases' file that does the mapping to say which face should be used as 'fixed' is in a different directory.
Now, running 'update-fonts-alias' does the copying of this '.alias' file from:
/etc/X11/fonts/X11R7/misc/xfonts-base.alias
(which works), but also prints an error message:
warning: /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc does not exist or is not a directory
Something clearly needs to be running 'update-fonts-alias' at the appropriate time.
So, here's the problem:
/usr/ share/fonts/ X11/misc/ *pcf.gz share/X11/ fonts/misc/ fonts.alias
/usr/
