Comment 8 for bug 540547

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but why does this bug remain "incomplete"? Which information is missing? And why does it not get assigned to someone?

This bug is really a showstopper for anyone with this video card. radeon.modeset=0 also does not work anymore. The main problem is that there is no working text mode at all. That means if anything goes wrong during the text mode only phase of the boot (between grub and kdm/gdm), e.g. a stuck fsck with a question or somesuch, the screen stays dark (or rather looks as if the LCD is melting...) and the system is unusable. The only way out is to reboot - in the example complete the fsck run from a live CD - and reboot again in the hope that the next boot goes through.

Any newbie would be totally stuck when this occurs.

BTW, I also tested with the mainline kernels from the kernel ppa, but there is no difference.

If I can contribute anything to troubleshoot this bug (short of rewriting the code, I only 'speak' Pascal and Basic well enough), would anyone please tell me.
