Same problem is happening on my Acer Aspire 2920 subnotebook. Ubuntu 12.04 Precise is able to detect TV output, as you can see on command below:

user@leo-subnote:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 800, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 261mm x 163mm
   1280x800 60.0*+
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 59.9
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   640x480_60.00 59.4
TV1 connected 640x480+1280+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   848x480 59.9 +
   640x480 59.9 +

   800x600 59.9
   640x480_60.00 59.4*

Ignore last TV1 and VGA1 modes. I added manually for testing purposes, to no avail.

I tested S-Video on Windows XP and it's working fine. Didn't tested on older Ubuntu versions, though.

I'll try applying Robert Lowert's patch on my subnotebook somehow.
