The monitor that flickers is the built-in LCD display of the laptop (HP Elitebook 2730p).

I booted 12.04 B1 with nomodeset boot option and there was no flickering (but otherwise wrong display resolution).
I reverted to 11.10, and the flickering stopped.
I will install 12.04 B1 from scratch, instead of upgrading, to see if the problem re-appears
