Debathena is the name an effort at MIT to offer the services of our campus computing environment, Athena, in the form of Debian packages available for all maintained Debian and Ubuntu distributions, suitable for use on the personal machines of MIT students and faculty as well as for course laboratories and dormitory workstations.

The project also encompasses converting the several hundred workstations in MIT’s iconic Athena clusters, which currently run either RHEL 4 or Solaris, to Ubuntu running the full complement of Debathena packages.

Debathena was started by SIPB <http://sipb.mit.edu/>, MIT’s student computing group, in 2006, and is now a collaboration between SIPB and IS&T <http://ist.mit.edu/>, the central IT department. The transition for the Athena clusters across campus occurred during summer 2009.

Currently, this Launchpad team is only used for tracking bugs of interest in Ubuntu; active development and Debathena bugs are tracked at http://debathena.mit.edu/trac/
