If smart remove did remove a snapshot you will find a line "INFO: [smart remove] remove snapshots in background: ['20150517-174502-378', '20150422-174501-641']" in your LOCAL /var/log/syslog.

On remote there is no logging. But you should see one nohup process for each snapshot to be removed with 'ps ax | grep nohup'
