Bug Description

After a fresh install of Kubuntu Beta I decided to make a full update from adept. I have additionally selected the j2re1.4-mozilla-plugin and Firefox. Adept failed to install the selected packaged and also stopped the update process with 9 packages left to download and install. Now, every time I want to install something from adept or finish the update I get the error that " There was an error committing changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages. " and there is nothing I can do to fix this.

Title: kubuntu 7.04 beta installs, but then Adept Updater/Manager fails to connect
Post by: gregconquest on 2007-04-03, 13:30:41
I did a fresh installation of kubuntu 7.04 beta (alternate install) yesterday. The installation went OK -- including the partitioning. However, there were three problems:
1) Up popped an error message:
   KDE Bluetooth Framework
Failed to connect to the SDP server.
      . . . make sure that sdpd is running . . .
(I don't remember when this occurred - maybe after the first reboot)
2) During the first update attempt (not launched manually):
Could not commit changes -- Adept Updater
There was an error committing changes . . . problem downloading packages . . .
3) Manually launching Adept Manager:
   Read Only Mode: Database Locked
You will not be able to change your system settings . . . because another process is using the packaging system database.

I've left kubuntu running for a couple of hours now after a reboot, and the update manager has not popped up. I just tried manually launching Adept Manager, but I get the same "Read Only Mode" message.

Am I going to have to wait for beta2 to be released and re-install? It seems my system can't connect and update. Is there some way of getting Adept to check for updates without launching Adept Manager?

Thanks,
Greg Conquest

I had the same problem, the crash occurred during the installation of vim-runtime (from /var/log/dpkg.log).
A few packages before dpkg failed to install j2re1.4 (I forgot to accept the license terms).

I did the following :

rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock
rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
dpkg --configure -a
dpkg --configure --pending
Ran aptitude selected vim-full, deselected vim-runtime, committed.

Adept is now working again.

Thanks for your bug report. As this report is connected to a beta release of feisty I assume the bug has been fixed. If you still receive this error with the stable release, feel free to reopen this bug again. Thank you.

I get the same error every time I download from adept. I click ok; it closes out. I check on the software; it's installed and working fine. Let me know if there's a fix. Thanx, john
