Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Ok. Upstream Kernel Installed, Replicating scenario under which it usually locks up.

Usually it does so after it's been running about 4 hours, so we'll see. Please do reply with the command necessary to post additional debugging information to this bug thread just in case it does happen. I'll check back in here in about 6 hours and keep an eye on the machine to see if the bug remanifests.

Using 3.5-rc2 does fix this bug.

You should probably reopen this bug and let the devs know what's going on.

@Pachy

Are you also seeing this issue again in the latest Quantal kernel?

@znorris,

Can you test can confirm the issue happens in v3.5-rc2[0] but not v3.5-rc1[1]?

@Joseph - No, I've got it pinned on the current kernel, still running
precise. So I haven't tested latest.

Pachy, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I am facing something similar. I am already struggling with an issue on this Tyan S3970 (Ubuntu 12.04.03 fully updated), which I am in the process of reporting here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1217229

I have a pair of system disks (raid/luks) which I am able to boot. I have a pair of data disks (raid) which, when attacked to the sata controller (along with the system disks) lead to a boot failure and drops me into busybox. When I hit control-d to continue the boot, I get stuff that looks like:

BUG: soft lockup - CUP#7 stuck for 23s! [kworker/7:0:469]
BUG: soft lockup - CUP#7 stuck for 22s! [kworker/7:0:469]
INFO: rcu_sched self-detected stall on CUP { 7} (t=15000 jiffies)
INFO: rcu_sched detected stalls on CPUs/tasks; { 7} (detected by 2, t=15004 jiffies)
INFO: Stall ended before state dump start

I have posted pictures of my screen. The first pic is of one boot. The second pair is of a second boot, both using Ctl-D from busybox:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/whypnvtkzkdyx3p/u3bnQQBqjb

One more piece of information: When I first booted with all 4 disks attached (zero'th boot, if you like), I was successful. I tried to mount the data disks and got a degraded array. That was odd, as I checked and the disk health was reported as good/healthy for both disks. Also, I had been watching the disks and there has been no sign of either disk developing problems. It's when I shut down and rebooted that I found myself getting dropped into busybox and took the first picture.

More information on my machine is located at the above bug report.

I'll add that if you google: kworker "bug soft lockup"

You will find similar issues reported on the suse and red hat reporting systems, including one that claims to have provided a fix:

DiagonalArg, this report wouldn't have anything to do with your problem. Please continue to comment in your report 1217229 so it may get addressed as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding.
