Hi Vikram,

Thank you so much for taking the time to fill this bug report.

This looks to me like a debconf error when part of a downloaded package can't succeed for some reason, I know the error is a bit obscure but it has happened before as noted by question #166815 (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+question/166815)

Could you please try to run

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

See if that helps, otherwise try

sudo apt-get -f install

If after all this the package fails to install please provide all the pertinent logs to the new upgrade tries and mark the bug again as "New" so it can be further reviewed.

Changed in samba (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
