Bug Description

Binary package hint: vkeybd

Wishlist item: Add a script and .desktop file to launch vkeybd with timidity. Probably needs to be a metapackage. Simple MIDI setup is too difficult for the basic user. JoeyJWC has an example script at: http://joeyjwc.x3fusion.com/blog/?p=37 Latency isn't going to meet the needs of any serious player but this provides a basic playable keyboard good enough for kids.

Well, actually it's pretty easy. Just add a dependency on timidity. Timidity currently automatically installs a root process which listens for MIDI events.

What would be really cool if it could be arranged that the default port for vkeybd would be 128:0. It took me a long time to discover that I had to run "vkeybd --addr 128:0" in order for it to work, since I really don't understand those ALSA midi ports. But if the default would be 128:0, then even complete MIDI ignorants like me would be able to do "sudo apt-get vkeybd; vkeybd" and start playing.

Thanks,
Noam
