Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

lbxproxy is no longer in Ubuntu, disappearing after being in Hoary. The X extension is still in libxext6, but the package for the command line program is not in there. I'd like to see it added back in.

Sources: http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/x11/xserver-xorg

It needs packaging because it would serve well in low bandwidth/high latency situations (X over SSH, etc).

Is it still part of the source or has it moved to a new tarball?

It is available here: http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases/X11R7.2/src/app/lbxproxy-X11R7.0-1.0.1.tar.bz2

That is the proxy program itself. The extension to enable it server-side still resides in the server code, and according to http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/libs/libxext6, it is still enabled (that is, libxext6 includes the lbx extension).

Can this be escalated to High priority? "lbxproxy" is a fairly ubiquitous utility distributed with X servers and the LBX extension compiled into the server ("libXext6") is pretty much useless without it. I use it on RedHat and Fedora Core distributions (and other Unix machines) and, after switching some machines to Ubuntu Feisty, was sadly astonished to find it's not there!!! It is a necessity for any reasonable real-time use of remote X clients across a low-to-medium bandwidth and/or high latency connection. It's commonly used for X over an ssh tunnel to remote machines -- which is my case. Thanks!

P.S. I always thought of Debian/Ubuntu as the ultimate distribution for completeness and thoroughness -- please don't let me down :)

I agree LBX is integral to the X11 suite, and should be available on all good distribution package managers.

That probably deserves to be in x11-xserver-utils.

Apparently LBX has been dropped upstream (XOrg 7.2).

It does not seem to have been dropped. The app is still available here:

LBX Util (which appears to be the extention) here:

Sorry, not sure what LBX util is, but XLbx.c is still a pat of http://ftp.x.org/pub/X11R7.3/src/everything/libXext-1.0.2.tar.bz2 so it is very much a part of the source.

Could someone put together a debdiff to propose for adding it to x11-xserver-utils?

I would like to vote for this issue.

If nobody else is going to do this, I'll see if I can figure out how to package this.

Thanks!

It seems LBX proxy was finally removed from the X source, mainly because there are better ways to do it. :) See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Bandwidth_X
