Not a bug -- request for information about Table of Contents

I am using Islandora which uses Internet Archive Bookreader to display page-image books. I have thousands of books to migrate from another system. These books have human-created Table of Contents information stored in XML. I would like to write specifications for a program that would take my XML TOC information and reformat it into the IA-specified Table of Contents format that is used by the BookReader.prototype.updateTOC function, then load the TOC table along with the book into Islandora.

First of all, does this sound feasible?

Second, if feasible, what is the format of TOC information I need to supply. I see the comments in the code:
  "pagenum" : "17",
  "level" : 1,
   "label" : "Chapter I",
   "type" : {"key" : "/type/toc_item},
   "title" : "THE COUNTRY..."
but I am not sure what this means -- is it a text file? what are the values for "type"?

Appreciate any advice you can give.
