Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Feisty Fawn 7.04 beta, updated daily.
Added Medibuntu repositories for libdvdcss2.
When I ran Totem through the Gui it would not play encrypted content.
Ran totem via the terminal, got the following results:

rob@kaleomemnb001:~$ totem
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 1.1.4 from http://xine.sf.net
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Attempting to use device /dev/scd0 mounted on /media/cdrom0 for CSS authentication
libdvdnav: Can't read name block. Probably not a DVD-ROM device.
libdvdnav: Unable to find map file '/home/rob/.dvdnav/.map'
libdvdnav: DVD disk reports itself with Region mask 0x00fe0000. Regions: 1

libdvdread: Attempting to retrieve all CSS keys
libdvdread: This can take a _long_ time, please be patient

Hardware is good -- DVDs played within the last two days on Windows when the notebook was dual boot, and on Edgy when I booted into Ubuntu using libdvdcss2 from the now-defunct plf repository.

On the suggestion of one forum member, I removed totem-gstreamer and installed totem-xine engine, same results. Error codes entered above are using totem-xine.
I hope this is helpful to the community and not just to me.

Forgot to note that when I run Totem through the GUI the following error results:

Totem could not play 'dvd:/'.
There is no plugin to handle this movie.

same problem here. But when I insert the movie, totem starts automatically and plays the movie correctly - but without DVD menu.

It seems that this is just a matter of installing the right packages. libdvdread and libdvdcss will always be needed. I installed libdvdnav as well. Only after installing xine-ui, some more packages were installed along with xine-ui and then dvd playback worked. Don't remember what exact packages were installed but I suspect one of the packages was needed for dvd playback with libxine to work properly.

Okay, becouse here xine-ui does not install any additional packages - all is already installed and DVD playback does not work with this menu...

Hey, I'm using Totem-Gstreamer and have still the same problem. Why did you added to the title [totem-xine] ?

This bug is about totem-xine, totem-gstreamer lacks correct DVD playing at the moment but that's bug #41335

okay thanks, but why are there 2 reports? It seems to be the same problem and are there any differences except the backend between totem-gstreamer and totem-xine?

Thanks very much -- did an apt-get install xine-ui, apt got that as well
as an updated libxine module. I already had libdvdread, libdvdnav and
libdvdcss. Once xine-ui was loaded DVDs load normally and offer full
menu functionality through Totem.
Many thanks for your help -- this is not a bug proper and can be closed
now. I'll see if I can pass on this bit of wisdom to others.
Kindest regards,
Rob

Yea, I installed now totem-xine and xine-ui and DVD play works perfectly with menus. Both, when insert CD and use autoplay and when using the menu item.

Thank you!

I did a fresh install of Kubuntu Feisty and found that there were only three packages not installed by default that needed to be installed in order to get DVDs to play. Since Kubuntu mainly uses xine based media players, this should relate to this bug.

The three packages are libdvdread3, libxine1-ffmpeg, and libdvdcss2. libdvdcss2 is not in the Ubuntu repository so it has to be acquired elsewhere. If you don't intend to play encrypted DVDs, you don't need to install libdvdcss2. Additionally, libxine1-ffmpeg requires libmad0 so it will install libmad0 automatically.

Yes, this problem persists with Gutsy. I installed totem-xine, but got the message:

until I also installed xine-ui . After installing xine-ui, my DVDs played, and their menus worked.

This seems to be a problem in Hardy Heron too, even after installing the plug-ins as mentioned above.

Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the development branch of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron?

Thanks in advance.

It hasn't been an issue for some time, and I thought I had reported this to the bug tracking site - sorry if I didn't get it input to the right place on launchpad.

As I recall the issue manifested with Feisty. I had loaded the non-free codecs from Medibuntu but still could not view DVDs. The first recommendation was to load totem-xine instead of the gstreamer-based, which I did, but still to no avail.
I had to load libdvdnav and one other library I can't remember right at the moment (I'm at work, not in front of my Linux box - sorry again!)
Nonetheless once I got the proper libraries loaded I had full functionality including menu navigation.

After doing a distro upgrade to Gutsy, DVDs continued to play normally.

I don't have a box loaded with Hardy yet, but have a spare notebook I can load the latest alpha on. Right now I'm rather busy, but will be happy to do a clean install of Hardy and report on my results. Would that be helpful? I'm happy to do so if it will help the community.

Kindest regards,

Rob Mitchell

I'm on Hardy now and seem to still have problems with the xine-based
players, but haven't been able to sucessfully run the DVD as I had
before either. I'll try and do it this weekend.

I managed to get dvds to play with xine-ui by running the following commands:

After upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04beta I had the same problem. Creating a /dev/dvd symlink fixed the problem. HOWEVER, it seems like neither Kaffeine nor Ubuntu are doing due diligence here:

First, Kaffeine's method of finding DVD drives obviously isn't smart at all. Second, this latest version of the player is incorrectly starting (each time it is run) an install process for libdvdcss2 after it cannot find the drive, making the user think that the player or the library CSS support is fundamentally broken when all the player needs is the correct drive path.

Third, its seems like Ubuntu should stick to some standard nomenclature for CD and DVD device paths (which keeps changing and changing yet again for each new Ubuntu release).

After upgrade to Hardy, I found xine was broken for DVD playing (there is no plugin to handle dvd:/...), and kaffeine could not find the libdvdcss2 library, which I had to re-install. I changed the settings in the xine gui from dev/dvd to dev/scd0 and it worked fine. But Kaffiene still wont recognize the libdvdcss2 that is installed, and wont play :-(. VLC worked out of the box, but its seems a bit unstable.

Same problems were encountered on a fresh install of Intrepid Ibex Alpha 2. However, after changing the media settings in the xine-ui to /dev/scd0 it is loading DVD media just fine. And the buffering problem seems to have been resolved as well.

Seems like xine is not detecting the actual device, and only adding a generic location.

in xine-ui you need to go to setup and change the "device used for dvd playback" in "Media" to /dev/scd1
