Juan, I notice from this report that you have a desktop system, but you do not have the ubuntu-desktop package installed. Do you recall if there was a reason that you removed this specifically, or do you know why it's not installed?

Steve, I have no idea, I made the report of course after I finished the
upgrade to 12. The desktop seems a bit strange, so may be there were
problems with ubuntu-desktop too (for example the cpu/disk/network meters
that I had configured don't show on the top bar and the default network had
changed so there was no Internet until I fixed it).
During the manual recovery I noticed that the HP network printer manager
(hplip) had modified some config files (CUPS, etc.) and the upgrade
required user intervention, but other than that it was just a unreadably
fast scroll of messages until it finished.
Can I do anything else for you?

Best Regards,
Juan

Thanks; the missing ubuntu-desktop package will remain a mystery then - though its absence may explain why you ran into this issue. I would suggest installing this package now.

I finally figured out how to launch Synaptic (still learning DASH) and
verified that ubuntu-desktop is installed.
I suppose that because the bug report was created during the upgrade it may
have not been installed yet.
It looks like the "apt-get upgrade -f" took care of all that prevented the
normal boot.
My suspect is hplip modifying some startup files that required user
intervention at an unecpected point. When recovering manually, it asked to
keep or replace several printer configuration files modified by hplip and
grub.conf which I think is related to a video driver fix I installed long
ago.
After two reboots, it is now working fine.
BTW, I kept the modified files so my HP printers work.

No; the logs clearly show that you did not have the ubuntu-desktop package installed at the start of the upgrade. So it must have been removed at some previous point.

Then I'll have to agree with you that it will remain a mistery. Though I am
certain that I had Nautilus, Gnome, Synaptic, etc. So It should have been
somehow available and somehow was marked as not-installed which would
explain why the upgrade failed and required manual recovery.
