Bug Description

I installed Xubuntu 6.06 off an alternate install cd onto an old compaq computer. When I boot the system, it goes fine until

INIT: entering runlevel 2
...
Starting GNOME Display Manager
Starting HP linux imaging and printing system

then the screen goes blank and nothing works. I can't even get into a console. However, booting into revovery mode works just fine, but I get the same result using startx

As a side note, I have exaclty the same computer that I installed kubuntu 6.06 on and then added the xfce desktop to later, and it works just fine

I just tried to use '/etc/init.d/gdm start' in single user mode and I got the same black screen, so gdm might be the problem
