Bug Description

Otherwise it looks quite awful in an ubuntu session.
Test case:
update to latest g-s-d, log out/in
pretty obvious

The latest g-s-d removed the 10_gnome-settings-daemon.gschema.override which was this
[org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings]
antialiasing = 'rgba'
hinting = 'slight'

Whether you want to also default to antialiasing = 'rgba' I don't know, but the hinting really should be changed

Do you have ubuntu-default-settings installed? Alternatively, in this case, ubuntu-gnome-default-settings should work too.

@jbicha I had to dist-upgrade to get those packages to download. I was always under the impression a dist-upgrade was the equivalent to a partial upgrade, which is not a good thing to do in testing?

I see what's happened here & likely some others. For various reasons
this install was prior to 08/21 so no, ubuntu-default-settings was not
installed. Going ahead & setting things back to the g-s-d defaults,
installing u-d-s & doing a log out/in & all is how it should be.

So actually not a bug it terms of the current state of 12.10

wojox, that's not quite correct. You'll need to do dist-upgrades to get new packages, such as new kernel versions or new dependencies like this one.

The important part to be careful with regarding dist-upgrades is that you pay close attention to removals. Try to understand why something is being removed. Sometimes the removal is a temporary problem called "arch skew" when one part of the package builds on an architecture and gets published before the other part is. Hopefully, that probably will be fixed in a future Ubuntu development cycle. Other times, a package is renamed or replaced and then it's ok that the old version gets removed.

You can also look through the changelogs to see if the packagers left any notes for what's going on. In this case, the changelog said:

gnome-settings-daemon (3.4.2-0ubuntu13) quantal; urgency=low

  * debian/gnome-settings-daemon.gsettings-override:
    - Dropped, override moved to ubuntu-default-settings and
      ubuntu-gnome-default-settings

I'm closing this bug since it seems a dist-upgrade was the only thing needed for someone with ubuntu-desktop or ubuntu-gnome-desktop installed.

Changed in gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Invalid
