Bug Description

Since upgrading to Quantal, my Thinkpad T510 will not come out of the screensaver blank screen.

I'm not sure if it's related to dpms or not, as I can't reproduce this by locking the screen manually for a few seconds, or by turning dpms on and off from the command line. It only happens when I leave my laptop and the screensaver comes up by itself, moving the mouse seems to turn the backlight back on, and I can see the mouse cursor, but the screen stays black, even if I try manually killing the screensaver process.

That sounds like bug 966744. It can occur under Precise, but seems to appear more under Quantal. Thanks.

Urm, now I see that an ubuntu-devel post, from Didier, says "Already present in precise, but doesn't seem to trigger as often as in quantal." So I may be wrong about that part. That'd make me less confident of why this started for you when you upgraded to Q.

But that bug is still my best guess. Undupe if you want, obviously. Thanks!

Unduped for now, just to keep noise at a minimum.
from irc:
"so, I didn't get a single black screen issue this weekend. On friday I changed "Turn screen off when inactive for" to "never"...so it may be related to dpms after all"

Please test with a mainline 3.6rc kernel too, available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline

I just installed 3.6rc7, and rebooted.
Once reboot, I closed my laptop lid (configured to not suspend, just blank)
Upon opening the laptop lid, screen had background and mouse pointer, but screensaver dialog didn't come up
Switched to vt1, killed gnome-screensaver, vt7 still had background and mouse pointer and a half-inch black square in the center of the screen
I ran dstack, and attached is the compiz stack trace.

I get the same stacktrace for compiz too, with 3.6rc7 mainline as well.

I got back from lunch, and 3.6rc7 displayed the issue with the screen blanking/locking after idle.
