The problem turned out to be because of this line in /etc/default/console-setup:
CHARMAP="UTF-8"

It can be solved by changing it to:
CHARMAP="ISO-8859-1"

Note that that is a work-around, not a fix.

I also found out that XKBMODEL needs to be set to:
XKBMODEL="pc104"

I had it set to:
XKBMODEL="pc105"
and it also did not work

Hello,

  I found that this problem also happens for Edgy installations that were upgraded to Feisty, and the solution is to run:
/etc/init.d/console-setup start (or restart) after booting Ubuntu.

There is nothing for ubuntu-universe-sponsors to upload, so I'm unsubscribing us from the bug.

Hi,

marking this as won't fix, since acon was removed from intrepid (and I doubt that we'll hence work towards an SRU).

Cheers,
