Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

I have used previous versions on the same machine and I do use Feisty on several other hardware plataforms.

USplash wont show up anything during the boot or shutdown (halt -n) using Ubuntu 7.04 Beta fully up to date on my Dell Optiplex GX 260 (video Intel 82845G/GL)

After the grub options, the screen goes blank and the first thing which shows up (after a while for the actual boot time) is the log on prompt for the session (gdm).

Every other graphical (GUI) aspect of the Feisty seems OK after the log on (so far).

I am using a Philips 105s monitor with the desktop.

The text mode under TTY terminals are also corrupted (CTRL+ALT+F1 ... F6), because the text shows up very large on the screen (some 4 times the usual size) and it scrools all the way to a line "outside" the visible portion turning the option unusable.

The gnome-terminal works fine under the GUI both for bask and zsh.

The installation process went rather smoothly.

I had the same problem and, luckily, discovered a way to fix it.

1. I updated the BIOS to Rev A09 (I was using A06)
I am not sure if this is necessary, but I've done it prior to discovering the solution.

2. In the BIOS setup in the menu "Intergrated Devices (LegacySelect Options)" I increased "Onboard Video Buffer" from 1 MB to 8 MB.

That's it, as far as my setup was concerned. I hope this is general solution.

Well,

I already had the A09 version, so it could not be this.

But I also had the video buffer on 1MB.

Changing it to 8MB solved the problem.

That is good, no doubt, but I have no idea why it was causing this issue or
what happened here.

I have other Dells (not the same model) and this never happened to any of
them.

Thanx for the solution.

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. This bug is a duplicate of bug 68012 so I mark it as such but I will forward your great workaround in that bug. Any further discussions about that bug should take place in the other bug report. Thanks a lot for finding this out.
